Dermal Fillers

Ageing Process

The ageing process takes its toll on every part of the body, from the muscles and bones, to your skin. Fat pads are closely packed areas of fat cells that help to give volume, shape and definition to your face. These can be found on the upper and mid face, as well as the lower face. Fat pads are usually also responsible for the shape of your cheekbones, as well as your chin and jawline and as we age two things begin to happen:

  1. The fat pads on the upper and mid face begin to waste away

  2. The fat pads on the lower face begin to get bigger

As some fat pads begin to decrease, the shape of your face will begin to change, as there is less support for other fat pads in the same facial region.

It is the visual impact of this process, particularly on the face,  that is something many people want to avoid, or rectify. This can include reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, or preventing them altogether. But it’s the effect of ageing on the facial fat pads that can have an influence on the structure and volume of the face, and this can cause skin to sag, and lose shape.

Dermal fillers are used for facial aesthetic treatments and are injected into the skin. They are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour and create volume, and to revitalise the skin. Dermal fillers are based on Hyaluronic acid which is a substance that naturally exists in your body.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in skin.

Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers revitalise and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent.

Dermal filler injections provide an easy way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for around 6 to 9 months. Dermal filler injections can give a natural looking result that does not affect facial expression.  As your face changes over time, dermal fillers allow you to control you looks subtly as you age.

Dermal fillers can be used to smooth away facial lines and wrinkles, create fuller lips and shape facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, and revitalise the skin.

Lips

Dermal Filler - Lips

Lip fillers restore or add volume to your lips. They don’t stop the aging process, but they might help delay the need for a more invasive surgical lip augmentation, like lip implants or a lip lift. They can also help you achieve a desired look, which boosts your self-esteem.

Over time, you may lose volume in your lips, which may be a result of:

Genetics.
Smoking.
Sun damage.

Lip fillers typically last 12 to 18 months. However, it depends on your age and how fast your body breaks down calories into energy (metabolism). Younger people tend to burn calories faster, so lip fillers don’t last as long.

Cheek Enhancement

Dermal Filler - Cheeks

Dermal fillers can be used to enhance the cheeks in different ways. They can be used to add volume to the cheeks or add definition to the cheekbones for a slimming effect. They can be used to masculine or feminise your face depending on the look you want.

Dermal filler in the cheeks can be used to restore volume in the areas under the eyes to reduce hollowness and restore a more lifted appearance overall. It can also be used to create a ‘contoured’ effect which can make your face appear more defined and even slimmer or more feminine/masculine (depending on how the filler is applied).

Some people have fat pockets (called ‘Festoons’) which develop in the cheek because of selective volume loss- cheek enhancement is ideal to get rid of these!

Cheek dermal filler is often considered to be a ‘core’ treatment as it can provide an ‘anchor’ effect to prevent the face from sagging due to the effects of ageing

Nasolabial Folds & Marionette Lines

Dermal Filler NLF & Marionettes

Nasolabial Folds are the lines that run from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth, and marionette lines are the lines that run from the corners of the mouth down to the chin. They develop because of ageing, loss of fat volume and repetitive smiling which makes the skin creases appear deeper. A mid-thickness hyaluronic acid filler is used to restore the volume loss within this region and soften the skin creases. This treatment is often successfully combined with cheek fillers and marionette line filler to give you a refreshed looking ‘face lift’.

Fine Lines

Fine lines are the start of wrinkles and look like small creases on your skin. They're closer to the surface of your skin, whereas wrinkles are deeper into your skin. You'll notice fine lines on your face where you make repetitive movements, like around your eyes and your mouth when you smile or squint. Smokers’ lines are sometimes also referred to as the barcode and occur as we grow older and the lip naturally starts to lose its volume. Smokers’ lines are often first noticed when lipstick starts to ‘bleed’ out of the vermilion border (the generally sharp demarcation between the lip and your adjacent normal skin) into the vertical fine lines around the mouth. These are more common and more pronounced in smokers, hence the term 'Smokers Lines'

Jawline Augmentation

Dermal Filler - Jawline

The jawline plays an essential part in the overall appearance of ones’ facial shape and profile, and has a big impact on how youthful you look. There are 2 main reasons for a weak or recessive jawbone;

  • Ageing

  • Genetics

The consequences of this are a lack of support to the surrounding tissues, leading to laxity and sagging in the jowl area. It also has a knock on effect to the appearance of the neck and the condition of the skin in this area as you age.

It’s worth noting that jawline fillers can often go hand-in-hand with chin fillers, to preserve balance.

Chin Augmentation

The chin is an area where facial reshaping can make a dramatic difference.

Chin augmentation using long-lasting advanced dermal fillers has a series of potential benefits:

  • Redressing the balance of the face – A small chin can disrupt the harmony of features. It can make the nose appear big and the face look small. Subtly boosting the chin brings features into better balance for a more attractive look

  • Create better definition – A stronger chin helps to assert the jawline and looks ‘stronger’ and more defined.

  • Slimming – A small chin lacks projection and structure and can therefore appear to harbour fat. Augmenting the chin can have the surprising effect of smoothing out double chins by creating a better overall shape

Improving the chin is a task which previously required surgical implants. These were notoriously problematic, with the risk of the implants migrating/moving/slipping and rates of infection also a concern.

Jowl Lift

Dermal Filler - Jowls

Jowls are caused by loose skin and muscle along the jawline and can make a person appear older or fatigued.

When strategically placed in the jawline, fillers can help lift and tighten jowls, creating a more youthful and defined appearance.

Fillers can help reduce the appearance of jowls and improve the contours of the lower face. The effectiveness of fillers in treating jowls depends on several factors, including the severity of the jowls and the individual's skin and muscle structure.

For mild jowls, fillers can provide a noticeable improvement in the appearance of the lower face by adding volume and lifting sagging skin. Moderate jowls may require more filler to achieve the desired results, while severe jowls may not be fully corrected with fillers alone.

A jowl lift is often combined with cheek and chin fillers, which help create the scaffold for the lower face. The results of filler treatments for jowls are usually temporary and may last for several months to a year.
